Preparation - The gear and logistics

I thought I'd split the preparation into two parts, the first being the gear and logistics with the second being me physically and mentally. Perhaps this can be viewed as "hardware" and "software".

Logistically, I'm probably a little "undercooked". I'm reading various blogs and posts from other hikers and it seems they have planned food drops on the way and bounce boxes they send ahead holding gear etc. they might need at some point. Apart from planning on leaving some food in Kaitaia on the way to Cape Reinga I've decided to pretty much wing it. Hopefully this won't end in tears.

I'm planning on using my phone running a couple of apps for navigation saving the weight of a GPS although I will take printed maps of some of the remote sections just incase of a technology failure.

Marie and Hayley are very kindly driving me to Cape Reinga which does resolve one of the logistical challenges as transport to there is difficult at best. It will also be so nice to have them see me off as I turn left and head off.

Looking at gear it became apparent that one of the requirements for a long thru hike like Te Araroa is lightweight gear and minimising the weight carried. I decided a base weight (that is weight of pack without food or water) of about 9kgs was a good target.

Unfortunately as I weighed and catalogued my existing tramping kit it became apparent the an almost total upgrade was required. By way of example my trusty Macpac pack weighed in at nearly 3kg whereas I really needed a pack weighing only one kg or so. Likewise sleeping bag, billy, tent, sleeping mat required replacing and the list goes on.

So, doing my bit for the outdoor supply and courier industries, I proceeded to acquire what I needed and am pleased to say I'm looking good for about 9.5kg base weight. It is amazing how a good Covid lockdown can be conducive to acquiring hiking gear!

I could bore you with a list of gear and individual weights but frankly, doubt if any readers except those looking to do this or another such hike would find it of any interest. Saying that, if anyone wants a copy of my gear list fire me a note and I'll send it to you.

Marie's kitchen scales have been put to good use weighing everything but I have been carefull not to interrupt the production of the famous brownie.

Gear assembled on the dining table. Hopefully I’m good to go
